DCMS The Culture White Paper
Culture brings many benefits. This white paper is concerned with three areas in particular:
– the intrinsic value: the enriching value of culture in and of itself;
– the social value: improving educational attainment and helping people to be healthier; and
– the economic value: the contribution culture makes to economic growth and job-creation.
Whilst sport doesn’t feature heavily in this White Paper, it does echoe many of the points raised in the Governement’s new sport strategy: A New Strategy for an Active Nation.
This White Paper does recognise the wider impact of culture on society including the desistance from crime. More evidence can be found in a review developed by the Culture and Sport Evidence (CASE) programme which is a joint programme of strategic research led by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) in collaboration with the Arts Council England (ACE), English Heritage (EH) and Sport England (SE).
