From reflection to action: introducing the Sport for Safer Communities Scorecard
In my last blog, I reflected on the difference between good projects and lasting change.
The point was simple: across the UK and around the world, there are many excellent sport and physical activity initiatives making a real difference in people’s lives. But if we want that work to influence systems, attract greater investment and contribute to safer communities over the long term, we need to ask whether the right conditions are in place for lasting change.
That means looking beyond activity alone and asking how well investment, evidence, partnerships, policy influence and sustainability are aligned.
Since writing that piece, we have taken the next practical step and launched the Sport for Safer Communities Scorecard.
Its purpose is simple: to help organisations investing in sport and physical activity across multiple projects, places, partners or countries understand whether the key conditions around their investment are aligned, so current funding and activity can act as a catalyst for lasting change rather than simply supporting short-term delivery.
The Scorecard looks at four core areas.
- Investment
Whether funding is aligned to outcomes, sustainability and future growth. - Policy
Whether the work is connected to strategy, commissioning, government priorities or institutional change. - Partnerships
Whether organisations are working collectively around shared outcomes, rather than operating in isolation. - Evidence
Whether learning is being captured, understood and used to influence future decisions.
It also includes a readiness review, helping organisations reflect on whether they are prepared to act on what they learn.
Why this matters
This Scorecard has come from our own learning as an organisation.
Through our work nationally and internationally, AoS has become increasingly involved in efforts to move sport and physical activity from isolated activity into more intentional approaches to systems change. In doing so, we have experienced first-hand the gap between strong delivery and the wider conditions needed for lasting impact.
We are also increasingly asked by organisations, funders and partners how they can strengthen their approach, influence systems and make better use of sport and physical activity to support safer communities.
The Scorecard is one way of sharing what we are learning through that work.
It reflects the discussions we have regularly with our partners and team members: is the investment aligned to the outcomes? Is the evidence strong enough to influence decisions? Are the right partnerships in place? Is the work connected to policy, commissioning or longer-term sustainability?
That is what the Scorecard is designed to help explore. It is a practical starting point for reflection, learning and action.
Who should complete it?
If you are investing in sport and physical activity across multiple projects, places, partners or countries, the Scorecard helps you understand whether that investment is aligned to create lasting change.
It takes around 6–9 minutes to complete and provides a personalised report showing where your approach is strong, where there may be gaps, and where to focus next.
Take the Scorecard today and discover whether your investment in sport is creating lasting change.
